ZAMMAMA’s tags are made from banana plants!
ZAMMAMA’s tags with its colorful icon are made from banana plants. It is One Planet Cafe, an NGO in Zambia, that produces this paper. Fibers are extracted form banana stems, mixed with used paper and then carefully handmade to fine paper. Fibers are also twined to make strings to attach the tags to products.
The colorful icon of ZAMMAMA printed on the banana paper was designed by Ms. Ryoko Zenyoji, who was a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer in the field of design in Botswana when ZAMMAMA was launched in 2018. It illustrates a smiley mother and children surrounded with a typical Chitenge pattern called “sunray”. The four colors are those used in Zambia’s national flag. Green represents the lush flora; the red the country’s struggle for freedom; black the people of Zambia; and orange its abundant natural resources including a wealth of mineral.
There are such stories and messages behind just the tags.
